Gear for fire and electrical safety
Fire and electrical problems can do a lot of damage fast. These are the basics most homes start with.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms — Most homes are required to have them. Smart versions can alert your phone when you’re away. Check your local code for where alarms go and whether they must be hardwired or interconnected.
- Fire extinguishers — The label lists which fire types each one is rated for (ordinary materials, flammable liquids and grease, electrical). Keep one where fires tend to start, like the kitchen and garage, and read the instructions before you need them.
- Surge protectors — Help shield electronics from power spikes. They wear out over time, so replace them as the maker recommends.
- Upkeep — Test alarms regularly and replace batteries on schedule. An alarm that’s been unplugged or has a dead battery can’t warn anyone.
